Rebecca works with colour, form and a continuing fascination with the idea of ‘vessel’. She uses a variety of techniques to explore these themes, such as raising, press forming, fabrication, etching and patination. All the vessels are a result of a combination of photos, drawing, models and intuitive making. Having discovered patination while at college, […]

I make a range of wooden items, primarily riven green oak, joined, carved and painted furniture. I draw my inspiration from and use seventeenth century woodworking techniques with period and original form and design. The method produces pieces of solidity and honesty, which bear the original character of the wood and retain evidence of the making. The carving gives fluidity to the solid forms which can appear to move and change in the fading light at the end of day. Riving and splitting the oak reveals its medullary rays which add to the glow of painted pieces.

Ruth Harrison Ceramics

My ceramics consist of slip cast shapes with disks or petal shapes that are cut from slabs of porcelain using icing plunger cutters or cookie cutters. These pieces are then sponged, scored and attached to the vessel using slip. Sometimes I add colour in the form of a glaze stain to the porcelain. Once fully dry they are fired twice in a kiln and glazed clear on the inside. I graduated from Plymouth College of Art with a BA Hons in Ceramics: my approach has its roots in a 2 week project called ‘Repeat Forms’ there, during which I became mesmerised by the idea of taking one shape and multiplying it around a shape to create a finished piece.

My work and passion is to create nature inspired, stoneware, rustic ceramics, using slab and coil building techniques. They often have contrasting textures and are coloured using a variety of oxides and glazes and fired in my electric kiln. My most popular pieces are from my Bee Hive, Seaside and Autumn Leaf collections, which range from £4 for a tiny ornament to £600 for a sculptural water feature.

I love making all my work, as it gives me a sense of peace, tranquility and grounding as I connect with the clay. Teaching hand-building classes and workshops, however, brings lively, social fun, skill sharing, and a real joy when seeing student’s reactions to the amazing work that they create.

Because everything I do starts with drawing, I often arrive at my studio with armfuls of blossom, roses or leaves I’ve gathered from the garden or woodland and sit down and draw.

My lovely print studio is based in North Devon where I create bespoke interior textile products, fabrics, wall-coverings and accessories using traditional printmaking and craft skills, combined with experimental digital technology using the very best materials sourced in the U.K. wherever possible.

My designs have been commissioned to create trays and rugs and have twice been shortlisted for the British Design Awards.

I am, and always have been, a bit of a collector: not of high value things that you have to be careful with. Just little, curious, quirky things that are everywhere in everybody’s everyday life. I just like to pick them up, look at them and put them in my pocket. Then I like to […]

Sarah Fox

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South West

In the family studio beneath Exmoor’s highest moors, Sarah specialises in two styles of jewellery inspired by the natural environment.  Sharing the studio with her father, engineer and silversmith Brian O’Hara, Sarah has drawn on his technical expertise to develop unique settings for polished stones using the studio’s “re-imagined silver waste”. Organic, tactile details – from fossil to fallen leaf – inform one-off, statement pieces with accents of Art Nouveau and a nod to her textile design background.

Here, where views towards Dunkery Beacon shift endlessly in tone and shade, Sarah enjoys the perfect space in which to hand-mix the colours for her tablet range of resin and silver cast pieces. Intricately-worked journeys in tonal variation, they explore the seasonal palettes of Exmoor, from the lichens and mosses of the oak woodlands and the brooding hues of the winterhill, to springtime flora and the weather-washed tones of the summer coast.

My works are primarily hand built ceramics, and are inspired from storybooks, wanderings, small interesting tales and nature. Always following my heart, I love seeing things in a simple way, inspired by folk art and fables. I interpret my imaginary scenes into clay, frequently using either porcelain or porcelain paperclay into little narrative scenes on hilltops (some with hidden secret additions inside), folkstyle figures using leaves and foliage as decoration and sometimes with some mixed media additions, and hand made ceramic buttons and decorative hearts. Items range in scale from hand made ceramic buttons up to individual narrative sculptural pieces.

I produce single fired, earthenware pottery. My work is wheel thrown and handmade using a loose slab making technique.

My work is loosely made and decorated, and imperfections, for me, are to be celebrated. I concentrate on individual pieces but make sets of plates cups, beakers which are similar. Pots are slip and sgraffito decorated.

My work is to be used, made for food and drink and I hope it will be fun and unusual.

I work from my studio in Dorset, specialising in creating wheel thrown detailed, unique ceramic pieces decorated with my own coloured clay slips, carving and sgraffito.

The slips and techniques I use have developed over the years, supported by a love of ceramics that was kindled at art college and matured while working at a pottery.

My work has evolved to create a very distinctive style, inspired by the natural world as well as The Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau and several different artists.
