I love to make pots that are functional, pretty and unique. My pottery is thrown on a wheel and then decorated with coloured slips, a transparent glaze […]

I am a printmaker with a passion for pattern and the absurd. When I was 7 I won an art prize at school. The headmaster held it upside down and I was (quietly) furious. I live in the vibrant city of Bristol in a very untidy house with my family. I have a loft studio where […]

Jane Suchodolski Ceramics

My craft is ceramics. My inspiration is from the world around me – the Cornish flora and fauna – people, trees, birds, flowers, horizontal rain and not least, the sea. My use of form, colour and tone in my studio work depends on how the clay is, my own input and the firing. I have several core designs: thrown work is in porcelain or local stoneware and I hand-build using porcelain paper-clay. I make almost all my own glazes and my work is twice-fired.

I make jewellery mainly using silver sheet and wire in a variety of techniques. I also use PMC to make pure silver chip beads which I incorporate into jewellery made with semi-precious chip beads.

I started with courses at the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery where I had a lot of fun and learned the basics. I gradually collected my own tools and have recently acquired my own workshop at home where I enjoy experimenting to see what will work. I find it inspirational to be able to live and work amongst the hills, beaches, seas and skies of Cornwall.

The aesthetic and design of manufactured metal tins hasn’t changed for over 200 years. Fascinated by this curious fact, Jessica began to design and make ceramic pieces inspired by the characteristics and forms of metal tins through vitrified porcelain. I am a trained silversmith who works mainly with silver but I have recently incorporated seaglass found on Dorset beaches into many of my pieces.
I love texture and my work involves reticulation and hammering. I’m put off by mass produced jewellery and therefore like to create one off pieces, while keeping my work affordable.

Kathryn Arbon Jewellery

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South West

I have worked as a jewellery designer-maker for around twenty-five years, I have been teaching silver jewellery related processes for ten.

My jewellery is inspired by pattern and ancient script and also the natural coastal environment where I live. I particularly enjoy making limited edition and one-off pieces in precious metals incorporating unusual gemstones.

Some of my jewellery is made using the lost wax process. I carve the piece in wax first which enables me to create the sculptural forms needed in some of my designs. Other pieces are carefully formed and pierced by hand using a piercing saw.

Alongside my own work, I love to design and create one-off commissions from pre-loved jewellery for others to be handed down to future generations.

I make a range of colourful enamel jewellery inspired by nature and simple forms. The use of vitreous enamels provides me with the perfect medium to add vibrant colours to my designs and to play with different colour combinations. I design and makes leather purses, bags and accessories. Based in Bristol my range includes jewellery, corsages, hair accessories, small coin purses, large purses, clutch bags and handbags.

Every piece created is cut and assembled by hand ensuring it’s uniqueness. I enjoy experimenting with floral shapes, which are all individually hand cut to create dense areas of interesting texture, maximising the sculptural qualities of the soft nappa leather. The purses are lined with quirky coordinating patterned linings. All fabrics are carefully sourced so combinations keep changing in order to keep items individual. All items are hand-crafted with every detail carefully considered ensuring each item is both functional, beautiful and tactile. I enjoy creating beautiful containers such as purses and bags for people to carry around their treasured possessions, which are as beautiful on the inside as they are outside.

Koa Jewellery

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South West

From his studio near the picturesque Poldhu cove on the Lizard peninsula, Lawrence Gibson creates his truly unique range of Koa jewellery. The coves and the landscape of Cornwall have and continue to provide an endless source of inspiration to Lawrence, allowing him to achieve a dynamic and contemporary collection of pieces that are entirely his own. The designs take a direct influence in nature and the seashore, harbour life and the movement of the sea. Also from summer pastimes and surf culture. Simple forms hold colour and respond to natural light, others frame scenes, an image or a memory. More often than not, as with a painting or a sculpture, the owner responds by seeing what only they themselves see in each piece. This makes the jewellery become even more personal. Every piece of Koa Jewellery is hand made by the artist.
Koa featured in March’s Vogue magazine in ‘The Crown Jewels’ – a focus on new British jewellery designers.
