Carol completed her MA in Jewellery with Distinction, at the CASS in London in 2015.  Carol has always loved stories and jewellery has become the means for her to tell her own. Her work takes inspiration from her memories, experiences and the contradictions and contrasts of life, explored in a subtle rather than explicit manner […]

Cathy Hilton Artisan

category: Paper

region: South West

I produce illustrated sculptures. Images are drawn, cut out and reassembled in to a three dimensional form. I work with a very tough, hand-made paper that is strong enough to be structural, and has a charming texture and tone. I seek to provide moments of joy, so humour, love and surprise are recurrent themes and I relish the expressions of delight that my work causes. As an illustrator I am self-taught since O level. I have a degree in Industrial Design which contributes to the structural element of my work. I’m drawn to help people express their appreciation for others, so there’s great tenderness in this work. I generally start from the emotion I wish a piece to evoke, and design from there.

Charmian Harris

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South West

Charmian works with gold in a way that celebrates its softness and its warm, rich colour. She often combines silver with gold, even using silver alone or in combination with stones and beads.  She selects these stones for their shapes and colours rather than for their technical perfection.

Charmian’s jewellery is made to be worn daily, to be cherished and, with the passage of time, to become integral to the personality of its owner.

Chilli glass by Penny Carter

category: Glass   Jewellery and Silverware

region: South West

Contemporary hand made glass beads. I create each bead individually in a flame, and they then grow into unique pieces of jewellery. I started my career as a glass blower and have gradually began working in a smaller scale to work more intricately with colour.
Enjoying superposing the light of juicy transparent glass, and the deep pithy intensity of opaque colours. By peeling through these layers it’s possible to create edible fruit like seeds – chilli pepper and pomegranate, kiwi and prickly pear…spikey gooseberry or peppery damson.

category: Jewellery and Silverware

I make delicate jewellery from silver, gold and gemstones. I combine precious metals, stones and some oxidisation of the silver to create contrast, incorporating small stone set granulations in my designs to add another level of detail. I never compromise on quality and work hard to create an intended organic, slightly irregular feel to my pieces, with my jewellery having a delicate human handprint on it.

My work is inspired by the North Cornwall coast line where I focus on the irregularities in shapes from pebbles, small details from rock pools and the contrast of the slate and quartz inclusions. After graduating from Truro College with a BA in Silversmithing and Jewellery with a First Class degree I continue to expand my knowledge of my discipline and will be studying the MA in Contemporary Craft this coming year at Plymouth College of Art and Design.

Claire Baker Ceramics

category: Ceramics

region: South West

Claire Baker is a ceramicist working in St Thomas Stoneware and paper clay. Her inspirations are drawn from the darker side of Victorian life, social history, theatre and circus and Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

An incredible amount of work goes into each piece. They are fired 5 times, layered with slips, glazes, decals and gold lustres to produce a distinctive patina. Teaspoons are reformed to use as handles for teacups and other mixed media is incorporated – usually vintage and metalware.
