Taunton-based 2008 Middlesex University graduate Emma set up Olive Rose in 2015. The name is inspired by her daughters’ middle names. She has a self-confessed obsession with the manipulation of a line. Using a Victorian lace craft called “Tatting”, she is able to manipulate a single line of thread into a complex structure.

I first started working with clay three years ago and I am self-taught; I love the beauty and clarity of porcelain and I enjoy the freedom of hand-building my pieces one by one and seeing their shapes appear. I add gold and platinum lustres at the final firing stage, filling my work with depth, optimism […]

My work invites the fingers to explore the nuances of grain. Starting with a locally sourced, sustainably cut “coppiced” tree, I cleave it using the ancient technology of the bodger. The pieces that emerge from this technique follow the undulating curves within the tree, and give my work a fluid, organic feel. My interest lies […]

I began to make pots at school. The art room, and the art teacher, provided a quiet calm space, which became an oasis of contrast to the noise and chaos of boarding school life. I went to Harrow Art School in the early 1980s, chosen mostly because it had a crèche, and found a course […]

Phoenix Stained Glass

category: Glass

region: South West

I am an artist working in the medium of glass. I am constantly inspired by the beauty and clarity of light in the Isles of Scilly, where I live and where my studio is located. Having trained in traditional leaded light stained glass which I still make to commission, I also make small scale traditional hanging panels, fused glass freestanding sculptures and framed pictures using pallet wood and fused glass.

Me and my little band of stitchers design and make a range of quirky accessories for fashion and the home. We use freehand machine embroidery to draw the designs in stitch onto a variety […]

Rachel Darbourne

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South West

Rachel graduated from Middlesex University in 1994 with a BA Hons in Jewellery. Students at Middlesex were actively encouraged to experiment with unusual materials and ideas within their work and Rachel was, and still is, driven by the desire to reclaim and use a much undervalued material. She views polythene as a ‘fabric’ and whilst on her degree developed a folding technique which turns this two-dimensional, slippery, colourful material into objects that are three-dimensional, intricate and robust.

Her approach combines elements of both jewellery and textiles, creating highly wearable, tactile pieces that are distinctive, eye-catching and yet address contemporary issues of consumerism and how we assign value to the things we use and wear.

I have been creating mosaic art for many years as a hobby. My first heart shaped mosaic came to life when I wanted to make something from a chipped dinner plate that belonged to my Grandparents to remember them by. As well as using the traditional materials of recycled china and colourful mosaic tesserae my love of the sea and beach combing has also influenced my work.

Some pieces have a coastal theme using pebbles, driftwood and shells. I also incorporate glass beads which is another fascination of mine. The nature of the materials I use on my mosaics makes each piece individual and unique. All the pieces are designed and handmade by me in my home….far away from the sea!
