Joanna Lloyd Glass

region: South East

I am a glass artist specialising in casting glass using a number of moulding and cold working processes. My glass is informed by my previous careers in archaeology and environmental planning – I use textures taken directly from nature. I make decorative and functional pieces that are very unusual.

I have both a First Class honours degree and an MA (Merit) in glass. I was Artist in Residence at UCA Farnham 2016-17.

I am a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen & Contemporary Glass Society.

John Franklin Jewellery

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

John Franklin Jewellery is a designer-maker of handmade aluminium statement jewellery, printed with colourful and unusual patterns.

The current Summer 2021 Collection was inspired by Ottoman ceramic designs from the 17th and 18th Century, as seen in the V&A Museum. Other collections are based on realistic images of flowers, butterflies and birds. The designs feature vivid and saturated colours, often using the reflecting brushed aluminium through the colour to produce an iridescent effect.

The earring and pendant designs are intricately hand-sawn and finished from aluminium, enabling ultra-lightweight earrings to be made with bold designs.

I work in ceramics, focusing on the idiosyncrasy of the human personality – exploring the challenge of penetrating outward appearances. I hope my work ignites a spark of recognition and has a playfulness; a sense of belonging to both past and present. Early British figurative pottery such as Staffordshire and Royal Doulton are inspirational but, to me, they have a perfection that’s unreal. An artist’s handmade piece reveals the figure’s individuality, making it accessible, expressing humanity and vulnerability.
I use porcelain paper-clay and vintage found objects. When fired to stoneware, porcelain can often move about serendipitously, shrinking up to 15%. The result is snow-white clay, which I juxtapose with colourful decals, and a transparent stoneware glaze, referencing the Figure’s prominent history.

region: South East

Knitluxe Studio is a UK based design studio, creating sophisticated yet playful sports luxe clothing and accessories using ethically sourced and sustainable luxury yarns. The studio aims to challenge and transform the perception of knitted textiles while retaining craftsmanship, traditional techniques mixed with modern contemporary knitwear designs. It is designed to make the wearer feel powerfully different, maximising the natural performance properties of wool.

Knitluxe Studio has been established by Szilvia Burrows – an award-winning textile designer in Buckinghamshire. Originally from Budapest, Hungary, Szilvia moved to the UK in 2009 to complete a course in Art and Design and went on to complete her degree in Buckinghamshire New University to pursue her dream to be a designer. Her accessories range is created with Supergeelong Lambswool, initially for sustainable reasons, however wool has many natural benefits and is one of the world’s most technically advanced fibres working in total harmony with the wearer’s body. Each piece is created and constructed by hand on a 12gg vintage hand flat knitting machine. At all stages, Szilvia is committed to sustainability and only selects high quality traceable luxury yarns.

region: London   South East

I am a textile designer and handweaver. All my products are designed and woven by me. I use a computerised dobby loom which gives me great flexibility in terms of designing unique and complex textiles. I trained in London at Handweavers Studio and work from my studio in Surrey. I am inspired by both modernist and traditional textiles from across the world, but especially the work of the mid-century Swedish women rug weavers whose work is now highly sought after. My current work is based on a damask weave which is a twill weave giving perfect drape for blankets, and great colour contrast in the pattern. I love the process of weaving, the fascination of following not only in the footsteps of my own ancestors but of practising and keeping alive a process which has gone on for something like twenty centuries of human activity. I also love to create things that will keep people warm, bring them comfort and give them pleasure.

I make hand-tailored soft-sided lampshades from vintage and designer fabrics sourced from all over the world. I have studied with Ian McQueen in London. I also make drum lampshades, cushions and I upholster and paint furniture, however, my main core product is the soft-sided lampshade and refurbished lamp stands. My inspiration comes from all over. I am a magpie and scour charity shops and the internet for fabric. I studied textiles and fashion years ago in Liverpool and have worked in illustrated design/arts/photography book publishing for the last 17 years so I am constantly surrounded by visual stimulus and actively seek it out. My style could be described as modern rococo with a bit of boho/granny chic thrown in!

Notably with a vintage feel, I make pretty personalised/quote necklaces, floral bracelets and bobby pins offered in vintage tins that I’ve found along my travels. I like to use as many medias as I can and love the romance of vintage and bygone days and this is in some of my pieces. I like to use extracts from period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice. I teach basic jewellery and themed jewellery making classes at a local college occasionally and have a weekly pitch on the market within the city of Cambridge.
