Dittany Rose

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

I’m a second career maker who returned to jewellery design in 2015, twenty years after graduating from Middlesex University. I make contemporary jewellery in bright colours, working in silver, layered coloured card and clear resin.

I aim to create pieces that are light, fresh and easy to wear; geometric shapes that add a pop of colour to an outfit; abstract forms without austerity, clean lines but with subtlety and detail.

In 2017 I had a 12-week slot as one of the featured jewellers in the foyer of the Hepworth Wakefield. When you buy a piece of Dittany Rose jewellery you are getting a piece of wearable artwork.

Dr Bean’s Bags

category: Fashion Accessories

region: South East

Dr Bean’s Bags are designed and made on the Isle of Wight. The Island is a creative environment and the seaside location was the inspiration for the initial concept; a simple yet strong bag that reflected a nautical situation. Use of natural fabrics, such as canvas and ticking, jute rope for handles epitomise the Classic Yachting heritage of Cowes. An eyelet and shackle add a pleasing finishing touch and each bag is individually numbered, much like a sail.

Our bags incorporate recognised phrases, poems and text, with stitched detail and appliqué. We like to celebrate the eccentricities of English life, which probably explains that the most popular style of bag features an extract from the daily ‘Shipping Forecast’.

In the world of Dr Bean, the forecast is always sunny – and can be made especially for the area you request.

Ed Oliver

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South East

I’m a artistic woodturner based in Kent. My woodturning is enhanced by texture and colour and in many cases I’m asked if it ceramic or glass.

The wood is like a canvas and the woodturning is like the potters wheel. My designs come from the natural beauty in the wood to be enhanced, or the everyday object that we come in contact with.

I’ve trained with some very gifted woodturners based in the UK and now teach the skills which I’ve collected along my woodturning journey, and am a member of the Register of Professional Woodturners.

Elizabeth Designs

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

I take a fresh approach to the design and making of silver jewellery, using inspirations such as flight in nature. I aim to design pieces that embody different perspectives, so each piece can be worn in several different ways. I have built a collection of high quality and detailed work over a number of years – my main technique is piercing, and I have used lace to emboss silver, making each piece original.

Elsiem Jewellery

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

My name is Lorraine Hitt and I am the designer and maker behind Elsiem Jewellery.

My forma design career disciplines including Graphic, 2D/3D Cad, Furniture and Architectural Interior are not only prevalent in my jewellery designs but have provided me with invaluable skills for developing my jewellery brand, all inspired by my love of simple visual forms, incorporating functionality and practicality.

My work is contemporary and often edgy.  I currently handcraft my designs using mainly brass and sterling silver, sometimes combining the two, drawing on my metalsmith training from both an experienced goldsmith and self-teaching and experimenting. I’m also in the process of learning CAD jewellery design and 3D printing, so I’m excited to see what those skills evolve into within my future collections.

I sell my work online, at fairs and currently have my brass and silver ‘Emulate’ collection at Kettles Yard, Cambridge.

Harriet Caslin

category: Ceramics

region: South East

Design led porcelain lighting and functional tableware are handcrafted in small batches from Harriet’s boat house studio on Mersea Island, off of the Essex coast. Influenced by her Scandinavian roots, Harriet’s designs focus on simple form, linear patterned design and soft contrasting colours to invite a tactile approach to her work.

“My work is all about appealing to the senses. I love the idea of someone using one of my designs and enjoying these little details; how comfortable the cup feels in their hands when drinking tea, how the colourful light transforms a room when it’s turned on. To me this is what creates an enduring and enjoyable relationship between the person and the functional objects that they use every day…”

Helen Burgess Jewellery

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

I am a self taught silversmith, working with traditional techniques in sterling silver and the occasional hint of gold, along with pieces made from Precious Metal Clay. I love to create hammered effects on sterling silver. With the precious metal clay I enjoy discovering new textures and contrasting bright silver with oxidized silver. The precious metals are often combined with precious and semi precious stones to create contrasts of colour and texture. My designs have been inspired by nature, art and love of colour and texture.

Henrietta Fernandez

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

I design and make understated, contemporary silver jewellery. Size ranges from tiny ear studs to bold necklaces and bangles.
I studied Jewellery at Middlesex Polytechnic and apprenticed with Wendy Ramshaw in the 80’s. Ideas for my work currently come from my love of 60’s graphic design, floral patterns and repeat pattern in textile design.

I’m meticulous about detail and finish and pieces I make are extremely precise. Everything is handmade and finished by me at my workbench. I hand pierce one-offs and use small batch production techniques, like casting, for some elements of my work – all made originally from my own handmade masters. Oxidised silver, 18 ct yellow gold, resins and beautiful stones accent my jewellery, adding depth and luxury. I apply a fine-papered finished by hand giving my work an elegant satin finish.

I make jewellery and accessories mostly using crochet hook. I am inspired by this technique and its versatility. All my life I am learning new things about this and finding new ways to use it. My work is made 99% from natural materials, semiprecious stones and silver, sometimes I use gold vermeil in my jewellery, too. I like to think that my designs offer something unique for people seeking something special.

Jan Horrox Textiles

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors   Textiles - Clothing

region: South East

My craft is knitted textiles made on a domestic knitting machine using mainly Scottish lambswool. I completed a 3 year diploma in Fashion/Textiles at Walthamstow Art School following which I worked with James Park couture knitwear for 2 years. The 1980’s saw the launch of Jan Horrox fashion knitwear – hand-made in the UK. This sold to high profile boutiques and the US and Japan, as well as from my stall in Covent Garden, but in 2005 I decided to downsize and sell retail only from craft fairs and online from my website.

My present range of knitwear is constructed from lambswool using domestic hand machines. Some fabrics are felted by washing. This produces a soft and durable fabric which is ideal for accessories and homewares. I have recently begun to use embellishing techniques with free machine embroidery onto this fabric, drawing images inspired by my country surroundings.

Jan Simon Design

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: South East

I design, create and teach contemporary fine silver jewellery using precious metal clay (PMC). PMC allows me to create individual and 3-dimensional pieces that are tactile and feel almost soft to the touch. My work is a pleasure to wear; the organic and textual designs are influenced by the properties and adaptability of the clay and I take much of my artistic inspiration from the marine surroundings of my hometown of Leigh-on-Sea. My latest work is all about exploring the possibilities of sculptural construction.

Jill Iliffe

category: Glass

region: South East

I work in fused glass, creating pieces that can be used in the home.  I am inspired by mid-century design and aspire to create pieces that have a clean look, are useful and good to look at. My distinctive ranges – Vintage, Fire and Ice, Scandinavian and Colour and Form – are designed and kiln fired with hand cut glass by me in my studio. Because of the process, each item in a range remains individual. My background is Fine Art and I have an MA in Drawing from the University of the Arts London, which has helped with my aesthetic and precision.

Jo Clarke Designs

category: Basketry

region: South East

I create textile basketry kits and original pieces using natural renewable materials. My designs involve using traditional basketry techniques with inspiration coming from the materials, the natural world and historical references. The baskets reflect the materiality of the fibres used being mostly jute, sisal, Manila hemp, flax and cotton. Hand weaving, twining, coiling and binding are the methods I use. I studied MA Textile Design at Norwich University of the Arts which reinforced my interest in natural renewable sustainable materials and also made me want to pass my knowledge on to other crafters. I offer workshops in my studio at DesignerMakers21 in Diss, Norfolk which go hand in hand with my basket design kits. I am a licentiate member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and a member of the Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society.
