Please Shut the Gate!

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: East Midlands

Some time ago I decided that it was time to dust off the 19 Century Letterpress in my old outbuilding at my home in Braunston and start creating my own work again, and so Please Shut the Gate was established! At first I produced a sign for my front gate (as my hens were getting a little too free range) and then a pile of Christmas cards as the festive season approached; now my range of products has expanded, with a collection of kitchenware, home furnishing & fashion accessories.

All the designs are unique – they may be printed from the same lino block but the ink, fabric, pressure, temperature in the studio all play a part in making the pieces individual. Once printed the designs are then made up into a range of items including tea towels, bags, cushions and even a satchel.

I have always been intrigued by the colours and textures of the coast, by the wide horizons and the big skies. I have been working with glass since 1998, fusing it with metals and oxides to create objects that, I hope, evoke long forgotten feelings of walking along the seashore. I don’t want to replicate […]

Samantha Robinson works with a subtle combination of porcelain, metals and textiles. Using the porcelain’s purity as a base and inspiration from textures, tags and the ‘everyday ordinary’, Samantha adds a subtle stitch, a hint of colour or a glint of metal, drawing our attention to what is often overlooked.

The processes involved are slip casting, hand building, stitch and embossing. This blend of techniques and materials provides a tactile and intriguing range of jewellery and interior pieces.
