Loopy Ewes

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors   Textiles - Clothing

region: South West

I bought my first sheep six years ago, absolutely determined to work with their wool to produce contemporary, artisan products with real provenance. My beautiful textiles products for the home can be traced from design, through production and right back to my flock of sheep that graze the Cotswolds countryside. My limited edition collection includes handwoven blankets, knitted accessories and sheepskin rugs. Across the entire range I aim to bring together woollen accessories for the home that offer aesthetic pleasure and a sense of warmth and cosiness. Most importantly, I want to connect my customers with provenance, with rural skills and with the feeling that they own something truly handcrafted, and evocative of our working countryside and great, British wool.

I find weaving to be an endlessly fascinating craft – watching how the different colours and yarns interact in the warp and weft, or playing with the structure of the cloth to create a new texture or pattern is something I will never tire of.
My aim is to create hand woven textiles that are equally attractive to the hand as to the eye. Textiles are a part of our everyday lives from a christening shawl, a comforting blanket to an elegant shawl, so it is important to enjoy them.

We are two sisters with a shared love of sewing and making things that goes right back to our childhood. We are inspired by our love of recycling, junk shop hunting and our passion for sewing. We love the idea that we are making something beautiful from discarded materials. We create cushions, soft toys and accessories to our own original design. We like to think that our work is traditional with a quirky, modern edge to it. Apart from an A level in Art we are entirely self taught but are carrying on a strong family tradition of making. Our unique ‘signature’ is the use of recycled woolen blankets which we then embroider onto.We think our work is fun; it makes people smile. Most of our products are limited editions mostly due to the recycled material of the materials used.

Madeleine Jude

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors   Textiles - Clothing

region: London   South East

I am a textile designer and handweaver. All my products are designed and woven by me. I use a computerised dobby loom which gives me great flexibility in terms of designing unique and complex textiles. I trained in London at Handweavers Studio and work from my studio in Surrey. I am inspired by both modernist and traditional textiles from across the world, but especially the work of the mid-century Swedish women rug weavers whose work is now highly sought after. My current work is based on a damask weave which is a twill weave giving perfect drape for blankets, and great colour contrast in the pattern. I love the process of weaving, the fascination of following not only in the footsteps of my own ancestors but of practising and keeping alive a process which has gone on for something like twenty centuries of human activity. I also love to create things that will keep people warm, bring them comfort and give them pleasure.

I create sculptural forms, wall pieces and jewellery. I use textiles, found objects, collected personal and family memorabilia and recycled materials mixed with new.

Much of my work is stimulated by the materials, both their physical appearance and qualities, and the story of their original uses and functions, and often, my own associations with them. Influences include Grayson Perry, Andrew Logan, Tim Walker, a 70s childhood, music and friendships.

category: Leather   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors   Toys and Automata

region: Midlands

I make handmade collectables such as woollen animal paperweights, giant leather bookends and quirky bookmarks. Having worked as an upholsterer for several years, many of my sewing stuffing and design skills were easily transferable in terms of creating my products.
I am inspired by nature, particularly woodland animals and also British and European folklore. I use natural and ethical products where I can such as British woollen fabric from our local mill, leather from a local wholesaler and recycled polyester.
My products range in price from £7.50 for an animal bookmark to £300 for a bespoke large traditionally made Teddy Bear with tailored clothes.

Mols & Tati-Lois

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: South East

I make hand-tailored soft-sided lampshades from vintage and designer fabrics sourced from all over the world. I have studied with Ian McQueen in London. I also make drum lampshades, cushions and I upholster and paint furniture, however, my main core product is the soft-sided lampshade and refurbished lamp stands. My inspiration comes from all over. I am a magpie and scour charity shops and the internet for fabric. I studied textiles and fashion years ago in Liverpool and have worked in illustrated design/arts/photography book publishing for the last 17 years so I am constantly surrounded by visual stimulus and actively seek it out. My style could be described as modern rococo with a bit of boho/granny chic thrown in!

Myra Hutton

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Midlands

Trained in Textile Art & Design at Ilkley College, I like to think of my rich felted landscapes as a traditional craft with a contemporary twist capturing the essence of a place or scene. I create my canvas in a ‘painterly’ way, building up textured layers of fibres, and use the sewing machine as a drawing tool to bring the picture alive. Other work is screen-print and stitch.
Inspiration comes from my natural surroundings and experiences, drawing on hues, shapes and textures of landscapes, tumbledown buildings, unruly wildness, broken gateways against fertile greens and browns of rolling landscape or the dark earthy secrecy of a wooded area, moss and lichen covered walls.
Although I have several themes all pieces are one-offs.

Navdeep Dhiman is a mixed media textile designer who specialises in making products from thread, resin, hand dyed plastic and handmade bead. The transparent resin pieces are hung on a nylon thread so light can shine through the striking colours and shapes, which make it ideal for hanging in front of windows, as room dividers or on a wall. Each of these pieces is unique and come in different range of colours, shapes, sizes and textures.

Recently, she has started to experiment with laser cutting to produce patterns that are not possible with resin on recycled card and perspex.

Please Shut the Gate!

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: East Midlands

Some time ago I decided that it was time to dust off the 19 Century Letterpress in my old outbuilding at my home in Braunston and start creating my own work again, and so Please Shut the Gate was established! At first I produced a sign for my front gate (as my hens were getting a little too free range) and then a pile of Christmas cards as the festive season approached; now my range of products has expanded, with a collection of kitchenware, home furnishing & fashion accessories.

All the designs are unique – they may be printed from the same lino block but the ink, fabric, pressure, temperature in the studio all play a part in making the pieces individual. Once printed the designs are then made up into a range of items including tea towels, bags, cushions and even a satchel.
