Diane Shaw Silks

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: South East

Unique one-off items created using only the finest silk fabrics, threads and trimmings. All are individually handmade by the designer in her workshop in West Sussex, England.

Initially trained as a maker of bespoke silk lampshades at a workshop in Brighton that supplied top international design houses, Diane started out by ‘recycling’ the silk remnants of this trade. She created a unique collection of cushions inspired by the shapes and colours of the individual fabric pieces themselves to which she added silk embroidery and other embellishments.

The collection has grown to include other home decor items as well as bags and gift cards. More items will be added soon.

The main design emphasis is on clean lines, and a neat, tailored feel that uses sumptuous silks to sculpture colours into folds, pleats and soft geometric shapes. Luxuriant dupions are layered with cool, crisp silk linens; royal taffetas are swathed with embroidered organza, and high-tech silk textiles from international design houses are complimented by simple hand woven natural silks.

Diane Shaw is a designer-maker currently listed on the UK Crafts Council National Register of Makers and in the Homes and Gardens Magazine Directory.

DrawntoStitch By Louise O’Hara

category: Mixed Media and Recycled   Paper   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: North West

I am a mixed media artist based in a small village in the heart of Cheshire; I work from my studio which is filled to the rafters with ephemera, vintage fabrics, typewriters, sewing machines, threads, hand painted papers and books, I am sure you can picture the scene!
During My Masters Degree in Fashion and Textiles I discovered ‘wabi Sabi’ and the ethos of ‘beauty in imperfection’; this really captures my inspirations and the work which I produce, I am influenced by tactile aged surfaces like peeling paint on walls and fabrics which are threadbare but laden with memories and stories to tell.
I use a combination of layered surfaces, collage, drawing, machine and hand stitch to create original pieces and I like to incorporate vintage and discarded items into my work to convey messages off nostalgia.

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Wales

I trained in Textile design at Derby college of art in the mid 70’s, specializing in weave and knit.I weave rugs, throws, cushions, scarves, heavy and fine work on my 8 shaft Harris loom.

My inspiration comes from the material I have to work with and the job it has to do.  I am enjoying the colours and forms of the Bauhaus movement at the moment.

I use alpaca, wool, cotton, recycled rags, in fact anything if it is right for the project.  I dye my yarn where necessary using natural, chemical and indigo dyes.
