I am an artist, a collector of “treasures” and a compulsive hand stitcher. I combine these passions in making one-off wall pieces that spark a sense of nostalgia. I use materials with a history – the kind of things that lie forgotten in the bottoms of drawers. Commonplace items that were used by our mothers […]

My work as an artist has evolved from my experiences as a child, within the South Wales valleys. I have explored traditional stitch and print within my work, reflecting on the working class values of community life with its humour and warmth. My work also reflects on the women who were in my life as […]

Alison Whateley Design

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: South West

I am a self taught textile artist living and working in Mid Devon. I have always been creative, and when I was younger I enjoyed both watercolour painting and sewing, so I have now combined the two to create beautiful individual pieces of textile art inspired by the natural world around me.

Colour and texture play a big part in my work, and I am always experimenting with new combinations. I use appliqué, free motion machine embroidery and some hand stitching to produce my pieces that each  evolve as I go along, therefore no two pieces are exactly the same.

I source all sorts of new and vintage fabrics, lace, buttons and beads to use in my work, and particularly love using vintage lace in my pieces.

Amanda Barnes Textile Artist

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Scotland

I make small creatures using lots of different fabrics and try to give each one it’s own character using small accessories, props or clothes. They are purely for decorative purposes.

Each piece I make is totally unique. Even if I’m using the same fabric or accessories, each small creation is absolutely unique. My latest mice ‘The Inquisitives’ are all paired with a preloved, vintage or antique item such as a wooden cotton reel, antique thimbles or piece of antique lace.

I love to use Harris Tweed, Velvet and Liberty Fabrics for my small creatures and it’s especially important for me to use either British fabrics or recycled and vintage pieces to give them that extra special touch.

region: North West

I work with fabrics, predominately silks, to create wall art and accessories. My work is influenced by details found within the natural world. Lichen and flowers are my main source of inspiration, with their subtle but intricate details reflecting empathetically the textures I create within my work.

I combine the use of traditional shibori techniques and incorporate a modern twist to create unique items. Shibori is the Japanese technique of binding fabric to create a resist when dyeing or to add a three dimensional texture to fabric. The modern influence is also seen in the process I use for adding colour. I use digitally printed fabric using designs created from my own photographs of plants and flowers

Annabel Perrin

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: North West

I am a surface pattern designer, specialising in the creation of unique print designs, which I apply to home textiles/accessories. I have a First Class Honours degree in Textiles and completed a Masters in Design in 2012. Following this, I developed my own brand and launched my first collection.

I create designs using a combination of hand drawn imagery and CAD. They are then digitally printed onto 100% heavy weight cotton in the UK. This printed fabric is sold by the metre or used to create hand-made home accessories, including cushions and limited edition, re-upholstered chairs. Buildings, maps and destinations inspire me. I love the aesthetic appearance of architecture. My enthusiasm about mid century design, geometrics and vintage products also influences my design process.

region: South West

I make kitchen textiles products and cushions. I’ve been a maker all my life – from a child if I wanted something I was encouraged to make it. My products are designed on paper, from which fabrics are printed and then I make the final pieces myself. They come initially from an idea of producing a range of pictures that could have been produced by famous artists. Cushions offer a natural way to present them, but I also have a passion for big aprons, like catering aprons but with designs that make them fun or as elegant as the apron itself will make people look. Wearing a big apron makes you feel ready for work, like you can achieve the world!

ArtShades

category: Paper   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Midlands

I’ve been making artisan lampshades from appliquéd papers since 1999. Inspired by the play of light and depth of colour in stained glass windows, I started using the technique of reverse appliqué (most familiar to quilt makers) to recreate the effect in colourful plant-fibre papers. Since then my range has grown to include hand printed designs as well as shades made using reclaimed vintage Ordnance Survey maps.

I specialise in half-shades for table lamps and wall lights, but also make full drum shades for table lamps, ceiling pendants and floor lamps. My shades can be custom-made to order in colours and designs to suit you, and I’m known for my personal service and attention to detail.

I spent many years formally studying and exploring ceramics, but the moment I started experimenting with wool, I was hooked. It’s a lovely natural material to work with and I’m particularly drawn to its textural and sculptural qualities. Working from my North Devon studio I mainly use a process called needle felting (also known as […]

region: North West

Textiles, colour and pattern are my passions. I design and make a range of cushions and home accessories inspired by a childhood spent rock pooling, collecting shells on the sandy beaches of West Wales, walking through enchanted woods of bluebells and growing flowers and veg in the garden alongside my parents. As such, nature in its infinite variety features heavily in my work.

Over the years I’ve amassed a fine collection of buttons, ribbons and vintage fabrics that have found a home in my craftwork alongside liberty prints and more recent fabric finds. I use various techniques including appliqué, machine and hand embroidery to conjure up magic and character in my colourful creations.

My work is inspired by stories, poems, over-hearings and memories. I am based in Yoxford in Suffolk. Re-using materials is an integral part of my work. I like to feel that they have ‘lived a little’ with their own story to tell showing signs of ageing and how they have been treated or, perhaps, mistreated. So my […]

Blighty Brights

category: Mixed Media & Recycled   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: London

Blighty Brights Studio offers original textile art, in the form of handmade, needlework cushions, made using materials found in charity shops. It is amazing how much fabric and craft materials turn up in charity shops. I’m always thrilled to find long stitch kits or old sewing baskets with tapestry wools.  It is a joy compiling something new and unique using retrieved, recovered and rescued materials.  The price range is generally under £100. The inspirations are largely drawn from childhood images with a contemporary twist.

Catherine Clark Embroidery

region: North East

With a First BA (Hons) in Textile Design, I have been a contemporary stitcher for 30 years, mainly using my craft for the past 25 years to support vulnerable pupils as a Behaviour Consultant and trainer within Educational Settings. Lockdown gave me the space and permission to become a full time contemporary stitcher and complete two projects called “Circles’ and ‘Blossom’. Drawing nature is the starting point for all my embroideries using mixed media and a mark making kit which includes a toothbrush, a sharpened chop stick and numerous twigs. I am right handed but draw with my left: this gives me a sense of freedom and can create some really interesting shapes. All embroideries are developed from my drawings then formed using seeding, couching, running and occasionally blanket stitch into Wallhangings. Stitch for me is a therapy, there is a calmness that comes with the rhythm and routine of a needle, thread and fabric. I apply the therapeutic practice of Slow Stitching throughout my work as well as giving priority to research and the creative process. Presently I am inspired by the concept of Animism which is a belief that all beings, animals, plants, land and waters possess a distinct spiritual essence.
