I make kitchen textiles products and cushions. I’ve been a maker all my life – from a child if I wanted something I was encouraged to make it. My products are designed on paper, from which fabrics are printed and then I make the final pieces myself. They come initially from an idea of producing a range of pictures that could have been produced by famous artists. Cushions offer a natural way to present them, but I also have a passion for big aprons, like catering aprons but with designs that make them fun or as elegant as the apron itself will make people look. Wearing a big apron makes you feel ready for work, like you can achieve the world!

Anne Fontenoy

category: Fashion Accessories   Paper   Textiles - Clothing

region: South East

I trained by hand in commercial art and fashion studios. A paste-up artist for IPC comics, oil paint make-up artist for display mannequins, couture belts and covered buttons using hand sewing and textile glue, and draftswoman for NCR. I started making dress patterns as a teenager. My hand sewn dress design and visual art practice started part time from my parents house in London in 1981, full time from 1987. All sewing is by hand. I specialise in silk, natural fibres, and original hand embroidery/beadwork, creating dresses for weddings, evening wear and luxury day wear and accessories: hand painted silk scarves, pochette silk bags, veils, silk headbands/scrunchies/bows. Dresses range from £250 to £5,000. Scarves from £45. Inspired by nature.

I design and make to order, remotely by e-mail and post and/or by appointment at my base in Kent (depending on COVID19 rules). There are some ready to wear one-off ladies clothes and samples for sale on my website where you will also find Christmas cards, note cards and original artwork and prints. Always open for online orders from my website for nationwide delivery or click and collect during the pandemic.

Elfn

category: Textiles - Clothing

region: South West

I am a felt maker, creating sculptural clothing and accessories. Inspired by the colours and textures in the nature that surrounds me, I use the Nuno wet felting technique to fuse merino wool and natural plant fibres onto cotton muslin and other natural fabrics to create unique textiles. I love to embellish and sew on the felt to create texture.
Inspired by a background in fine art printing and painting and then travelling the world, I discovered felt making in Switzerland and apprenticed with artist Sophie Prieur making felt for couture fashion. I started making felted wall hangings in 1999 and eventually moved onto the Elfn range of seamless clothing and accessories. I have exhibited in Switzerland and London and now work from my studio in the Somerset countryside, ever inspired by the beauty in English nature.

Fruitbat Textiles

category: Fashion Accessories   Textiles - Clothing

region: South West

I am an award winning Somerset based hand weaver, dyer and milliner specialising in unique, luxury British wool accessories for men and women. My work is carefully created using traditional skills and techniques and is inspired by the South West countryside.
I hand dye (often painting) all of the wool myself, hand weave it on one of two Counter March looms and hand finish the cloth before making it into the finished products.
I trained in Textiles for Fashion & Interiors, specialising in Woven textiles, learning the millinery element of my work alongside my degree while working as a Milliners’ Assistant. I am hugely passionate about keeping traditional crafts alive within the country and work hard to educate society about the skills and standards needed to create traditional hand crafted pieces.
My often bespoke, unique pieces for women and men range from scarves and wraps, ties, cufflinks, flat caps and other casual style hats, to occasion wear such as hats and fascinators. I also welcome commissions.

Helen Bolland Shibori Pleated Silk

category: Textiles - Clothing

region: North West

Helen’s passion and aspiration is to create striking and original fabrics of complexity and beauty; whose colours appear to ripple and pulsate, shifting chameleon-like as light diffuses across their unique textures.
Drawing her inspiration from the natural world – exotic birds, sea creatures, flora, the living landscape, Helen’s interpretation of the ancient Eastern craft of Shibori has two distinctive elements, bringing together the artisan and the artist, a union of control with the uncontrollable.
The creation by hand of the pleats is a practical, mechanical, steady, reliable and very time-consuming process; the dyeing process is far less predictable, as the dyes are given free rein to blend and flow. There is an empathy with the sculptor who feels her role is to release the creation already hidden within her materials.

Hollie Bailey Handwoven Textiles

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors   Textiles - Clothing

region: Midlands

Hollie Bailey is a dynamic hand weaver, producing beautifully crafted original pieces from her studio in Leicestershire.
Her fabric designs are a brilliant mix of traditionally executed construction using regular weave structures, combined with a more contemporary play on yarn properties, resulting in a unique range of woven textiles.

She is already an accredited designer whose fabrics are recognizable by their award winning unique style. This trademark style is recognisable by its movement and individuality. The creation of these pieces is achieved by expertly manipulating the shrinking nature of woollen yarns, alongside stable yarns, creating soft textures and undulating surface qualities, resulting in wonderfully unusual one off fabrics. Hollie indulges her unique and distinct style with sumptuous fibre choices of soft lambswool and lustrous silks, creating a well-balanced contrast of tactile textures and opulent designs. This, combined with her innate use of colour makes Hollie’s fabric desirable and divine.

Jan Horrox Textiles

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors   Textiles - Clothing

region: South East

My craft is knitted textiles made on a domestic knitting machine using mainly Scottish lambswool. I completed a 3 year diploma in Fashion/Textiles at Walthamstow Art School following which I worked with James Park couture knitwear for 2 years. The 1980’s saw the launch of Jan Horrox fashion knitwear – hand-made in the UK. This sold to high profile boutiques and the US and Japan, as well as from my stall in Covent Garden, but in 2005 I decided to downsize and sell retail only from craft fairs and online from my website.

My present range of knitwear is constructed from lambswool using domestic hand machines. Some fabrics are felted by washing. This produces a soft and durable fabric which is ideal for accessories and homewares. I have recently begun to use embellishing techniques with free machine embroidery onto this fabric, drawing images inspired by my country surroundings.
