I create handmade paper lamps, lampshades, and homeware that feature one of my own hand drawn illustrations. My inspiration comes from the natural world, patterns and graphics. Each lamp, lampshade and candle cover is finished with a solid wooden ring that completes the natural and simple look of the product. I grew up loving painting, art […]

region: Scotland

I am an artist, a collector of “treasures” and a compulsive hand stitcher. I combine these passions in making one-off wall pieces that spark a sense of nostalgia. I use materials with a history – the kind of things that lie forgotten in the bottoms of drawers. Commonplace items that were used by our mothers […]

Alice Fox

category: Paper   Printmaking

region: Yorkshire

My work combines techniques from textiles and printmaking traditions, the two often combining to make abstract contemplative pieces that celebrate and carry an essence of what I experience in the natural world. I aim to draw the viewer in, invite them to look closer and perhaps notice things they might otherwise have over-looked. I work with paper and cloth as well as making use of materials gathered from the places I walk.

My work ranges from large-scale installations for specific spaces to intimate framed artworks and artists’ books. Each piece develops by layering up marks and textures, building up subtle surfaces and exploring materials through the making process. I use found metal objects with tea to make marks on paper, silk and linen, making use of natural dye techniques. I set things up and watch them develop, responding to the marks that appear with further layers of print and the contoured lines of hand stitch.

Ancient Treasures

category: Jewellery & Silverware   Mixed Media & Recycled   Paper

region: Midlands

I studied textile design at the Central School of Art and Design. I was always inspired by how colours react with each other, and also loved texture, particularly in nature. Researching at the British Museum I was much taken by the ancient necklaces in the Middle Eastern section. This inspired the development of a range of necklaces, made with handmade beads. I am interested in that which is lost, obscured, veiled, from an age long ago: much of the original colour has been rubbed off in the long journey through time but flecks of gold occasionally glimmer through the dusty neutral shades. As well as developing my range, I also run bead and necklace making courses.

I trained by hand in commercial art and fashion studios. A paste-up artist for IPC comics, oil paint make-up artist for display mannequins, couture belts and covered buttons using hand sewing and textile glue, and draftswoman for NCR. I specialise in silk, natural fibres, and original hand embroidery/beadwork, creating dresses for weddings, evening wear and luxury day wear and accessories: hand painted silk scarves, pochette silk bags, veils, silk headbands/scrunchies/bows. Dresses range from £250 to £5,000. Scarves from £45. Inspired by nature.

ArtShades

category: Paper   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Midlands

I’ve been making artisan lampshades from appliquéd papers since 1999. Inspired by the play of light and depth of colour in stained glass windows, I started using the technique of reverse appliqué (most familiar to quilt makers) to recreate the effect in colourful plant-fibre papers. Since then my range has grown to include hand printed designs as well as shades made using reclaimed vintage Ordnance Survey maps.

I specialise in half-shades for table lamps and wall lights, but also make full drum shades for table lamps, ceiling pendants and floor lamps. My shades can be custom-made to order in colours and designs to suit you, and I’m known for my personal service and attention to detail.

Bask Bindery

region: London

Bask Bindery is noted for its fresh approach to the age-old profession, the bindery is set to shake up the industry with its handbound journals uniquely fused with striking collages designed to be covetable by the beholder and beyond. All pieces produced by Bask Bindery are designed to have the “oooh factor”. Truly individual, each piece is made by hand with high quality materials and include detail such as hot foil tooling, suede or leather onlays to add extra dimension to the collages.

All journals are Bradel Bindings. Bradel binding can be traced back to the 18th Century and the bookbinder has juxtaposed this traditional binding form with vivid modern collage designs to create standout handmade designs that retain functionality. For example, each journal can open fully. Each collage was digitally printed before covering the outer boards to create a truly distinctive handmade journal. Prices start at £95 for a Bask Bindery passport holder, ranging up to £120 for a handmade A4 journal. Bespoke commissions are welcomed.

My work is inspired by stories, poems, over-hearings and memories. I am based in Yoxford in Suffolk. Re-using materials is an integral part of my work. I like to feel that they have ‘lived a little’ with their own story to tell showing signs of ageing and how they have been treated or, perhaps, mistreated. So my […]

Book Transformations

category: 3D Sculptural Work   Paper

region: North West

Kate Bufton’s work is an ongoing exploratory development, manipulating the shape and form of old books. The physicality of old books is an important inspiration for her work. The stained pages hold many unknown possibilities. The rough textures and musty smells help with progression throughout her practice as she continues to explore their physical structures. By altering the original form of books through various cuts and folds they are transformed from a carrier of text to an object of art.

Cathy Hilton Artisan

category: Paper

region: South West

I produce illustrated sculptures. Images are drawn, cut out and reassembled in to a three dimensional form. I work with a very tough, hand-made paper that is strong enough to be structural, and has a charming texture and tone. I seek to provide moments of joy, so humour, love and surprise are recurrent themes and I relish the expressions of delight that my work causes. As an illustrator I am self-taught since O level. I have a degree in Industrial Design which contributes to the structural element of my work. I’m drawn to help people express their appreciation for others, so there’s great tenderness in this work. I generally start from the emotion I wish a piece to evoke, and design from there.

Clare Caulfield

category: Mixed Media & Recycled   Paper   Printmaking

region: Yorkshire

I am a Saltaire based artist and printmaker.  My work is inspired by my travels to some of the world’s most beautiful cities including Paris, Venice and New York.  Working in a lively drawing style I aim to capture the excitement, life and vibrancy of each location I visit, documenting my travels through the use of sketchbooks and photographs.  On returning to my studio I then produce mixed-media paintings, original screenprints & drypoints, limited edition prints and handmade cards.  These are exhibited throughout the U.K. in regular solo and group shows.

Closer to home I have also produced a series of work capturing the rugged beauty and charm of Yorkshire’s much loved coastal towns: Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes.

DrawntoStitch By Louise O’Hara

category: Mixed Media & Recycled   Paper   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: North West

I am a mixed media artist based in a small village in the heart of Cheshire; I work from my studio which is filled to the rafters with ephemera, vintage fabrics, typewriters, sewing machines, threads, hand painted papers and books, I am sure you can picture the scene!
During My Masters Degree in Fashion and Textiles I discovered ‘wabi Sabi’ and the ethos of ‘beauty in imperfection’; this really captures my inspirations and the work which I produce, I am influenced by tactile aged surfaces like peeling paint on walls and fabrics which are threadbare but laden with memories and stories to tell.
I use a combination of layered surfaces, collage, drawing, machine and hand stitch to create original pieces and I like to incorporate vintage and discarded items into my work to convey messages off nostalgia.

Florence Makes

category: Paper

region: Yorkshire

A purveyor of curious commodities. Florence Hoy is the designer/maker behind Florence Makes and is currently based in Leeds. Florence was originally trained in ceramics but found more joy in creating the paper test pieces prior to crafting the vessel. As a result, she now works primarily with found papers including vintage Ordnance Survey maps, rail tickets & British stamps.

Florence is currently exploring the theme of repetition in the curious commodities collection. The potential that repetition can bestow on an item is fascinating; the most rudimentary of objects can evolve into something grandiose, something which far exceeds its previous status. It transforms the insignificant and overlooked. Whilst each piece created is unique, an intermittent sense of familiarity is apparent throughout the collection.

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Florence Makes and we just love the thought that something which has become a little obsolete, such as a vintage Ordnance Survey map can be transformed into something beautiful for your home and have a new, repurposed, lease of life.

Now more than ever, it’s important for us to embrace our connection to other people. The maps used in our pieces are just another way we can feel connected to someone else’s life, we can share in the journeys that person made before the map ended up in our hands.
