Paper, Paint & Clay Studio

category: Ceramics   Mixed Media and Recycled   Paper

region: North West

I make wall sculptures out of drift wood branches, ceramic bowls and platters wrapped in papier-mâché and ceramic collages that hint at a story. I love combining different textures to create very tactile pieces. My work is influenced by the weatherworn surfaces of the Manx landscape, the coastline, and my love of the sea, then wrapped with papier-mâché. The papier-mâché is a wrapping of love! It’s a memory of my sister and I, who with great care and glee unwrapped the Christmas decorations. These wonderful jewels had been so carefully folded in old newspaper ‘skins’, now my papier-mâché skins! My repeatedly worked surfaces of clay are under constant revision, referencing the endless remaking of the shoreline, then decorated with oxides, under glazes, glazes and gold lustre.

Paula Powell Original Artwork and Handmade Cards

category: Mixed Media and Recycled   Paper

region: North West

Paula Powell Original Artwork and Handmade Cards offers products with three aspects: Growing – artwork and accessories for children ; Living – artwork for the home; Loving – keepsakes and stationery for celebrations. My work originates from a love of memories associated with garments, fabrics and images. Fragments of lives, histories held in items often thrown away. This includes children’s clothes; the fabrics, prints and memories they hold.

My range includes canvases, framed artwork, hangings, memory boxes, pomanders, cards and stationery. Applique techniques, hand and free motion embroidery combine with paper, wax and new, painted or recycled fabrics and garments. Ribbons, buttons, found objects and vintage lace are firm favourites. Stitch brings it all together by adding names, dates or messages to create a unique, personal gift.

Rachel Coleman Designs

category: Mixed Media and Recycled   Paper   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: North West

I started creating my textile artwork after graduating with a degree in embroidery in 1996. Since then I have exhibited my work widely and had many commissions.  My work currently can be seen in many galleries and interiors shops.

My artwork uses simple naive imagery to create multi layered embroidered textile pictures that explore personal anecdotes, memories and childhood narratives. I use recycled fragments of vintage fabrics, machine embroidered graphic lines, traditional embroidery techniques and reclaimed ephemera to evoke a sense of nostalgia. “It’s the small everyday things that I find most interesting, such as a word, object or colour that reminds me of my childhood. I try to let my work develop organically so that I can retain the vibrancy of the moment I am trying to convey.”

I have a selection of ranges all inspired by my personal sketch books.

category: Glass   Mixed Media and Recycled

region: South West

I have been creating mosaic art for many years as a hobby. My first heart shaped mosaic came to life when I wanted to make something from a chipped dinner plate that belonged to my Grandparents to remember them by. As well as using the traditional materials of recycled china and colourful mosaic tesserae my love of the sea and beach combing has also influenced my work.

Some pieces have a coastal theme using pebbles, driftwood and shells. I also incorporate glass beads which is another fascination of mine. The nature of the materials I use on my mosaics makes each piece individual and unique. All the pieces are designed and handmade by me in my home….far away from the sea!

I am an explorer and investigator of objects, stories, places, materials and memories. I collect fragments of narratives, textures and feelings and turn them precious things, bound, wrapped, adorned, stitched and embellished. I am fascinated by material culture, history and the power of objects in human lives and the importance of making and remembering. I […]

Sally’s Shed

category: Mixed Media and Recycled

region: Midlands

I specialise in hand-painting street scenes and individual buildings, shops and churches onto wood, allowing the beauty and character of the wood to complement my art work.
My inspiration comes from the buildings and architecture of Lichfield, and also my garden, where I design and create my products in my little brick built shed: my creative haven.

The wood I use is either donated by friends and family, or found in the ‘unloved’ section at local timber yards. Each piece is unique.

My extraordinary objective is to realise the necessities and requirements that would be involved in ‘fairy life’: to provide everything a fairy would demand during its daily existence. I have named these ‘Fairy Aiding Inventions’, invented by ‘Brain’ (me). They are theoretically functional items for the mildly eccentric. I try to express a sense of […]

Sarah Villeneau Ceramics

category: Ceramics   Mixed Media and Recycled

region: Yorkshire

Inspired by nature, I try to capture the essence of the organic in my work. I create sculptural vessel forms and abstract sculptures. The former capture the essence of form and movement with satin matt glaze surfaces; the sculpture is more visceral, formless and textured, with the occasional inclusion of “alien” objects – nails, pre-fired ceramics etc. Having followed a number of art courses over my adult life, the most formative was the MA in Studio Ceramics completed in 2014. This marked a turning point in the direction of my work alongside much more honed technical skills in making and glazing. Vessel-based work is slabbuilt over a former with pinched additions; the sculpture is created by pummelling and pinching textured clay slabs to form abstract shapes which are then added to.

Shirley creates wall hung and freestanding sculptures and shadow frames, using white earthenware to hand form flower components, small creatures, birds and fish. Texture is embossed into the surface. Under glazes and oxides are applied to give layers of colour. These are then assembled together with driftwood, wire, reclaimed maps, vintage magazines and other interesting […]
