region: Yorkshire

I’ve been lucky to always inhabit a world in which Selotape, string, paper and cereal boxes are plentiful…. And to have been surrounded by lovely folk who’ve encouraged me and put up with the mess! After initially training as a Theatre Designer, and working for several years in the Art education sector, I use these […]

Katie Essam, Contemporary Applied Art

category: Mixed Media and Recycled   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: South East

I’m a mixed media textile artist. I use fabrics, threads, paper, paint, crochet, tatting, couching, free hand machine embroidery and appliqué combined sometimes with found items in my pieces. I love all things vintage, and the hidden beauty in the everyday thoroughly inspires me. I tend to frame or mount all my pieces.
I have a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Applied Art from the University of Hertfordshire, and graduated in 2011. I love to do commission work, working from a photo or an image, and am also very happy to customise any of my designs, changing fabrics and colours etc.

Laura Edgar Textile Artist & Tutor

category: Fashion Accessories   Mixed Media and Recycled   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: North East

Based in Whitley Bay on the North East coastline, I work in textiles and mixed media, exploring an eclectic mix of vintage textiles, recycled clothing, paint, ephemera and haberdashery, hand and machine embroidery to create original art, prints, handcrafted fashion accessories and cards.

I am fascinated by texture and the ephemeral changes to light, texture and colour by the elements on our sea and landscapes. I find inspiration in nature and all things vintage, collecting beachcombing and flea market treasures; intrigued by the nostalgic associations and emotive power of nature.

Lindsey Kennedy Portfolio

category: Mixed Media and Recycled   Mosaics

region: West Midlands

Originally I trained as a jeweller and silversmith at Birmingham School of Jewellery, but I have transferred my skills to designing and making mosaics. Still gem-setting in lots of ways with highly reflective materials, just on a larger scale! I am currently inspired by the positive/negative patterns created by tree branches and the richness of highly decorative East European embroidery – bright colours against dark backgrounds.

I work to commission, on exterior and interior panels and I’m creating a range of work to sell online, in local galleries and from my studio. Prices range from £20-£300 for existing work and £350-£4000 for commissioned mosaics.

region: South West

Little Burrow Designs is the whimsical repurposed sculpture world of mixed media artist Claire Read. Each piece, or “storybox”, is created entirely by reworking vintage and antique objects and curios, often with a combination of vintage textiles. Most storyboxes are one-off, unique sculptures. A few are possible to recreate, although will never be identical, and […]

Little Mill House

category: Mixed Media and Recycled   Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Yorkshire

I upcycle vintage materials such as tea towels, scarves and glasses into beautiful cushions and gifts. The idea for Little Mill House came from my obsession with hunting vintage items and needing a creative way to free them from storage. It then became an excuse to continue hunting lovely items and share them with other people. I was taught by my auntie to sew as I was growing up and have had professional tuition by a private tutor to perfect my techniques. Everything is made at home by myself and quality is a priority.

category: Jewellery and Silverware   Mixed Media and Recycled

region: North West

I create jewellery with a playful feel that is a pleasure to wear and own, finding inspiration in the things I love to collect, vintage fabrics, buttons and natural forms collected on walks near my home. I studied Jewellery Design and Making BA Hons at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University, graduating in 2007. Since then I have been producing my jewellery and sell through galleries and individual boutiques.
My collection includes charm bracelets, earrings and necklaces, each one slightly different due to the hand made elements and precious vintage buttons that are in limited supply. I first crochet, knot or plait natural hemp/cotton cord to form the base for my pieces. Using copper and silver wire, I create planished charms in a variety of organic shapes, some oxidised. Vintage buttons and beads along with etched wooden veneer charms that feature my own intricate organic designs complete the pieces.

We are two sisters with a shared love of sewing and making things that goes right back to our childhood. We are inspired by our love of recycling, junk shop hunting and our passion for sewing. We love the idea that we are making something beautiful from discarded materials. We create cushions, soft toys and accessories to our own original design. We like to think that our work is traditional with a quirky, modern edge to it. Apart from an A level in Art we are entirely self taught but are carrying on a strong family tradition of making. Our unique ‘signature’ is the use of recycled woolen blankets which we then embroider onto.We think our work is fun; it makes people smile. Most of our products are limited editions mostly due to the recycled material of the materials used.

Magpie Maison

category: Mixed Media and Recycled

region: North East

I make a variety of small artworks, homewares and wearable items from recycled, vintage and discarded materials.
I studied Jewellery & Silversmithing at Glasgow School of Art, where I became interested in working with mixed materials. I am most inspired by nature, fairytales and antiquity, creating one-off or limited quantity collages, which are box framed. Other works include textile jewellery, framed textile collages, and handmade cards. I have a studio/shop in Durham city.
I try to reuse as many old objects and materials as possible, sourcing from antique fairs, markets and thrift shops. Old cutlery boxes, vintage textiles, scrap papers, old books, broken jewellery and haberdashers’ materials are some the treasures I enjoy working with.
