Martin Urmston : Handwood Furniture

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Midlands

When asked at school which O levels I wanted to take, top of my list was woodwork simply because I enjoyed it. An A level then a college diploma with City and Guilds from High Wycombe College (now Bucks Uni.) followed. After 7 years the luxury of life as a student finished: I however continued woodworking, practising and honing my skills. The desire to design and make my own furniture professionally never diminished and in May 2008 I took the plunge. I now spend my days in a converted stable block pursuing my vocation.
Trees are truly beautiful things and wood is a wondrous natural material taking decades to grow. Each piece that I make I view as an opportunity to create an object of beauty that can be treasured for generations.

Metamorphosis Hand-Painted Furniture

category: Furniture & Wood   Mixed Media and Recycled

region: Yorkshire

At Metamorphosis we source items of beautiful, previously owned old furniture and bring them back to life. We rescue, restore or repair and then revitalise them. During the process, their personalities begin to shine through. They start to acquire names. We get a feel for their potential. Some of them like to keep their original purpose, and others like to try their hand at something else. All undergo some form of metamorphosis, and become beautiful, unique individuals. We also revamp other pre-owned things; sometimes these are restored to their former purpose, and sometimes they take on a new artistic twist.

Nick Hammond

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Wales

I am primarily a wood turner based in South Wales. I am self taught and take my inspiration from anywhere from the piece of wood that I’m using to architecture, or from other pieces of furniture that I see. At the moment I am concentrating on making table and floor lamps as I really love making something that is both functional and looks amazing.  I use local hardwoods from the very local area or at worst within about an 80 mile radius. I like to be able to support my local wood store as well as keeping the risks of importing timber at bay.

My work invites the fingers to explore the nuances of grain. Starting with a locally sourced, sustainably cut “coppiced” tree, I cleave it using the ancient technology of the bodger. The pieces that emerge from this technique follow the undulating curves within the tree, and give my work a fluid, organic feel. My interest lies […]

Possible Mirror

category: Furniture & Wood

region: London

Possible mirror specializes in making bespoke mirrors in a variety of natural woods and hand painted finishes. There is an ever-expanding range of designs to choose from and we welcome commissions. We make conventional mirrors, including oversize ones, but our unique feature are Box and Picture Mirrors.

Box Mirrors contain objects – shells, marbles, small glasses, eggs, dried flowers and so on. The interior walls of these mirrors also become part of the design using maps, fabric, collage, and even faux fur. Each mirror is different to some degree and some are unique – items sourced at the nearby Spitalfields Market will not be available again.

Picture mirrors incorporate images into the mirror design. All Picture Mirrors have anti UV glass to prevent deterioration. An attractive ‘antiqued’ mirror glass is also available and this can be used in any of the mirrors we make. Prices are from £50.00.

Rivers Joinery

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South West

I make a range of wooden items, primarily riven green oak, joined, carved and painted furniture. I draw my inspiration from and use seventeenth century woodworking techniques with period and original form and design. The method produces pieces of solidity and honesty, which bear the original character of the wood and retain evidence of the making. The carving gives fluidity to the solid forms which can appear to move and change in the fading light at the end of day. Riving and splitting the oak reveals its medullary rays which add to the glow of painted pieces.

Sadie Dorchester

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South East

I was inspired to make my furniture range when I was unable to find sustainable, British made, contemporary storage solutions for my own home. After gaining the AMUSF craft qualification I set about designing an eco friendly, bespoke range of furniture, uniquely inspired by the modernist art movement.

Upholstered inside and out using a high quality recycled Italian wool from Linwood, the range offers beautiful and original furniture that compliments any interior. All of the Sadie Dorchester designs are offered as adaptable made to measure templates, available in over 55 colour combinations with a choice of feet.

The range has been made with sustainability in mind from the inside out. No plywood or foam is used. Only FSC certified solid pine and eco friendly components. The lids are made as a frame using mortis and tenon joints for strength and then webbed for comfort and to be as lightweight as possible. There are 10 designs in the range and growing. Each piece is made to order with prices starting from £290 for a small footstool to £1300 for a large blanket box which will fit at the end of a king size bed.

My forms are inspired by the landscape around me. The textures reflect the rugged beauty of rocks exposed to extremes of wind and rain, shadows that dance across the fields that I can see from my studio, can be glimpsed through the pierced surfaces. Holding the pieces and following the curves and textures gives you […]

Timothy Hawkins

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Midlands

Master Craftsman Timothy Hawkins became a professional furniture designer maker in 1980. He uses various species of wood & the pieces which he designs and creates may be unadorned, or might include inlaying; parquetry; carving or turning – other materials such as glass or metal are sometimes incorporated, too.

Tim & his craftsman use time-honoured methods to make bespoke domestic, corporate and ecclesiastical furniture to meet diverse requirements and budgets. He creates both contemporary & traditional furniture as well as extraordinary pieces (either for clients or for exhibition) that he feels happily stand their ground in the context of Art, whilst serving a practical purpose.

Pieces may offer a viewpoint on various aspects of life, inspired by our world, by Tim’s own experiences and those of others. Such pieces sometimes take many hours of thinking and drawing before crystallizing into a workable design, others may develop very swiftly!

Tom Provost Furniture

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Wales

I make contemporary bespoke furniture using primarily native hard woods, sourced as wind fallen trees and converted into boards for construction. I also incorporate other materials (glass, stainless steel, leather) wherever required/requested.

My formal training was carried out though an apprenticeship working under a time served professional, here I also gained a city and guilds level 3 qualification in furniture making and fitting.

My inspiration derives from the flowing form, colouring and simplicity of the trees themselves. During the design process I use various techniques to explore design concepts: 3D computer modelling, mock-ups and sketches are all possibilities here. I use traditional methods of construction such as dovetails and mortice/tenon, these methods ensure my work is beautiful yet durable.

Toucan Creations

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Yorkshire

I design and craft wooden geared pendulum clocks to commission. I use various species of timber including walnut, oak, sycamore among others. My designs are a contemporary take on the traditional weight driven clock and showcase the movement of all of the clock parts. I like to incorporate various themes in to the head of the pendulum. For example my nautical clock highlights an intarsia square rigger ship and my most recent clock design incorporates a relief family coat of arms to produce a unique family heirloom. Creating something that is finely crafted, durable and unique is important to me as a maker.
My training is in both visual arts and engineering. I use traditional woodworking techniques plus woodturning, wood carving and intarsia as part of my craft.

Turnaround

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South East

Turnaround – Ian Banstead’s World of Woodturning offers bespoke, unique and handcrafted woodturning by a visually impaired woodturner. A qualified electrician for nearly 10 years before losing my sight, I started a woodturning course with the RNIB which sadly was brought to an abrupt end when the premises closed. I was very fortunate to then meet retired professional woodturner Dick Waller, who as well as transforming my skill and enjoyment in woodturning designed some special chisels to allow me to cut various patterns and shapes. I am open to commissions: please visit my website via the link below for details of these and the many pieces I have turned to date.

Whitethorn Woodcraft

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Northern Ireland

Glenn White and Kelley Hann handcraft bespoke furniture using reclaimed or sustainably sourced wood in their workshop near Haytor, Dartmoor.

With a background in the traditional timber framed building industry, we use time honoured techniques to create fresh, contemporary designs. The majority of our pieces are joined with mortise and tenon joints then secured using oak pegs. We believe that our furniture should not literally cost the earth, preferring hand tools and sourcing materials locally.

We love character in our materials. Awkward grains, knots, splits and cracks are a beautiful distraction from the homogeny of mass production, a stamp of natural authenticity.

Whitlock Wooden Designs

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Midlands

I primarily work with wood or resin making a wide range of pens. Beautiful pens crafted with exotic woods or something a little more involved with segmented designs. Working with resin enables me to achieve stunning colours or encapsulate some really odd things for a novelty pen. This takes up most of my time but I have a big interest in all areas of woodwork and when time allows making wooden boxes or wooden intarsia.
