85fathoms

category: Furniture & Wood

region: North East

My work has evolved from a background of engineering and boat building/refurbishment, plus a natural ability and love of making things by hand in wood.

I design and make items of furniture that have complementary features of aesthetic and structure, and that ultimately let the natural beauty of the wood remain the main focus of each piece. My designs often blend a contemporary modern look with a somewhat retro tinge, with strong influences from my boat building days in the use of laminated curves and the use of contrasting wood types to induce a colour variation into the aesthetic.

I use no machinery in the construction at all and each piece is finely finished by hand to really let the wood and natural features stand out.

Andrew Spilsbury Shaker Boxes

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South West

I have had a love of working with wood for over 40 years, mostly furniture making but also some turning and now box making.

I love the smell of wood when it is worked, exposing and presenting the grain for others to appreciate.  I have made furniture inspired by pieces made by the Shaker craftsmen and now make Shaker boxes to their traditional patterns, using Cherry and Maple woods steam bent and fastened with copper tacks and rivets.

My boxes, trays and carriers with handles make thoughtful and useful presents. I continue to develop my range of creations in order to offer useful and decorative objects to treasure and enjoy.  Sizes are from 9cm x 6cm x 3cm to 36cm x 25cm x 15cm. Prices from £20 to £140 approx.

Chris Eckersley

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Herefordshire

Chris Eckersley is an artist and designer who makes sculpture, objects,  and furniture. His interest is in making well-crafted and carefully considered pieces which are designed to last. Chris was born and brought up in Birmingham – in those days a hive of small industries known as the ‘Workshop of the World’  – and so inherited the Brummie attitude that it’s perfectly feasible to get a small workshop and make things by hand. One-off commissions for individual pieces are welcomed.

Chris is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a former Visiting Tutor at Central Saint Martins College, and an External Examiner on the Spatial Design course at the University of Hertfordshire.

In 2010 Chris Eckersley set up the ‘Bodging Milano’ project, whereby nine designer-makers rediscovered the ancient art of ‘bodging’ (greenwood chair-making) in the ash woods of Herefordshire – and then took the results to the Milan Furniture Fair.

Ed Oliver

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South East

I’m a artistic woodturner based in Kent. My woodturning is enhanced by texture and colour and in many cases I’m asked if it ceramic or glass.

The wood is like a canvas and the woodturning is like the potters wheel. My designs come from the natural beauty in the wood to be enhanced, or the everyday object that we come in contact with.

I’ve trained with some very gifted woodturners based in the UK and now teach the skills which I’ve collected along my woodturning journey, and am a member of the Register of Professional Woodturners.

Howard Lewis

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Wales

I’m a self taught maker in wood: working as a farmer in beautiful mid-Wales, trees & woodlands had always intrigued me as an integral part of nature, and with an abundance of windblown trees around me, it was a natural progression to purchase a lathe and attempt to honour the spirit of the tree by creating a piece that displayed its beauty. That philosophy has stayed with me from day one. I have a variety of pieces, ranging from solid burr oak coffee tables, to bowls, decorative platters, vases, sculptural forms/pieces etc. I often like to incorporate different techniques into my work, such as fuming, bleaching and scorching the wood. I also like to add materials such as leather cord, metal, nails & paint techniques into my work. I take inspiration mainly from nature, and respect and admire the work of many fellow makers.

John Parsons

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Scotland

I design and create innovative contemporary turned wood pieces, specialising in the challenge of making small, high quality boxes, striving for the perfect shape, a smoothly fitting lid, and a beautiful tactile finish.

Design cues are taken from nature, witnessed in the smooth, often gently curving and flowing profiles. Beauty from simplicity. Perfection in form. Working with natural materials. These are some of the things I am passionate about.

The boxes are made from sustainable woods and range from pure and simple, single wood designs, through to boxes featuring carved decoration, or inlaid contrasting woods. Interiors are equally finished to a high standard. They are little works of art with wide appeal for those who appreciate craftsmanship and the beauty of natural wood.

Kim Davis Woodturner

category: Furniture & Wood

region: Midlands

I am a self-taught wood turner and forever learning. My working philosophy is ‘from the hands of the artist to the heart of the beholder’.
I create vessels and objects that have the clean, calm lines of a timeless form. Inspired by the intrinsic beauty of the native and exotic woods I use (all ethically sourced), I produce tactile shapes which have function at the same time as transcending into unique pieces of art by using the wood’s natural organic traits, often enhanced with various finishing techniques. My products range in size from bottle stoppers and bud vases through to larger bowls, vases and platters, to large statement pieces, including many natural edge pieces.
