Claire Baker Ceramics

category: Ceramics

region: South West

Claire Baker is a ceramicist working in St Thomas Stoneware and paper clay. Her inspirations are drawn from the darker side of Victorian life, social history, theatre and circus and Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

An incredible amount of work goes into each piece. They are fired 5 times, layered with slips, glazes, decals and gold lustres to produce a distinctive patina. Teaspoons are reformed to use as handles for teacups and other mixed media is incorporated – usually vintage and metalware.

region: Yorkshire

I am a Saltaire based artist and printmaker.  My work is inspired by my travels to some of the world’s most beautiful cities including Paris, Venice and New York.  Working in a lively drawing style I aim to capture the excitement, life and vibrancy of each location I visit, documenting my travels through the use of sketchbooks and photographs.  On returning to my studio I then produce mixed-media paintings, original screenprints & drypoints, limited edition prints and handmade cards.  These are exhibited throughout the U.K. in regular solo and group shows.

Closer to home I have also produced a series of work capturing the rugged beauty and charm of Yorkshire’s much loved coastal towns: Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes.

Clare Hillerby Jewellery

category: Jewellery and Silverware

region: North West

Handwriting forms the starting point in my work. Postcards featuring handwritten messages from unknown characters are sourced to begin my process; I also search for old stamps and linen maps that have become separated from their original families ties and could otherwise be discarded as worthless.

Interesting sections are extracted from the found ephemera and combined with new handmade metalwork inspired by markings in our urban environment. The fragmented handwriting appears as pattern with intriguing hints of the original messages. By combining and layering contrasting handwriting, with stamps and maps and new metalwork, I create new contemporary stories to translate by the wearer.

Silver is oxidised to highlight the ephemera and gold tube rivets are used to construct parts of the work. Old wooden rulers are also scattered amongst the pieces.
