Standing On A Beach

category: Glass

region: Scotland

Each item is created from layering pieces of glass and fusing to create texture and structure. Initially the glass is cut from cold hard sheets, after firing the glass seems to warm and soften developing a sense of fluidity. Opaque and translucent colours are used together to create a feeling of movement from the light transmission through the fired piece.

Each firing is unique, it is unpredictable, and it has a life force of its own. I am always excited when opening the kiln, you never know exactly what the outcome will be, but it is always beautiful.

Stitching for the Soul

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Yorkshire

My name is Beverley Holmes-Wright and I have been stitching and creating for over 20 years, but started up a part-time business a few years ago, after completing an honours degree in Creative Practice from Leeds Met University, for which I received First Class.

Why Stitching for the Soul? Stitching makes me happy and is an integral part of my life, it keeps me busy and enables me to meet people who are like-minded, making and buying well crafted hand-made items. I am partial to a bit of soul music too!

I produce carefully made, physical pieces which please the eye and brighten up the homes which take them in: using only the highest quality fabrics and threads, each piece is made using a variety of free machine embroidery, appliqué and delicate stitched patterns. But perhaps the largest part of my work involves planning aesthetic colour schemes and composition so that each creation is harmonious and balanced.

Stripykat is an independent Edinburgh based bag and accessories business creating bright, beautiful and stand out designs from creative and colourful fabrics.

Inspiration comes from everywhere: architecture, clothes, the fabrics I use, nature and shapes and textures, and even my many doodles – sometimes these need a lot of development but I like to try new things and stretch myself.

Studio Shards

category: Glass

region: South East

I am a fused glass artist. I produce artwork, gifts and homeware. My work is inspired by nature and captures the power and fragility, the movement and textures of an ever changing landscape.

I also make bespoke pieces to mark special occasions in life. My artwork prices range from between £10-£300. I run workshops from my studio and have vouchers exchangeable for gifts or for sessions. I was Art and Pe trained and until recently was an assistant head-teacher, but I have taken the plunge and set up my business doing something I am passionate about and living my dream.

Springing from the pages of my sketchbooks and inspired by all things ornithological, I have been printmaking for nearly 20 years.  I specialise in collagraph printmaking, a process which involves making a collage combining tile cement, carborundum and found textures. This plate is then printed in the same way as an etching.  The technique provides […]
