Sophie Bruen Ceramics

category: Ceramics

region: South East

I graduated from Falmouth College of Arts with an honours degree in Contemporary Crafts, where after experimenting with many materials I gravitated towards ceramics and its endless possibilities. I have since moved to Buckinghamshire where I have set up my studio at home creating handcrafted ceramics, mostly functional, inspired by the natural world and my love of entomology. All of my work is foodsafe, microwave and dishwasher safe.

category: Glass   Jewellery and Silverware   Printmaking

region: East Midlands

I was first introduced to Contemporary Enamelling during my Masters degree in Print Making. Enamelling is the art of fusing glass onto metal. I like to use copper for its versatility and its beauty as a base metal. My work takes multiple short firings to create an individual piece.

My inspiration spirals from a multitude of objects that carry a history. The origins of this inspiration develop from my fascination with the juxtaposition of artefacts, objects and specimens found within museum collections.I have found inspiration by collecting old maps, hand written postcards, notebooks from the 1930s and antique lace that had been salvaged from old garments.

For me there is a narrative quality that connects all the objects; each containing a trace of the past. I am interested in the idea of embedding an image into the surface of enamel and thereby adding a sense of permanence.

Standing On A Beach

category: Glass

region: Scotland

Each item is created from layering pieces of glass and fusing to create texture and structure. Initially the glass is cut from cold hard sheets, after firing the glass seems to warm and soften developing a sense of fluidity. Opaque and translucent colours are used together to create a feeling of movement from the light transmission through the fired piece.

Each firing is unique, it is unpredictable, and it has a life force of its own. I am always excited when opening the kiln, you never know exactly what the outcome will be, but it is always beautiful.

Stitching for the Soul

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

region: Yorkshire

My name is Beverley Holmes-Wright and I have been stitching and creating for over 20 years, but started up a part-time business a few years ago, after completing an honours degree in Creative Practice from Leeds Met University, for which I received First Class.

Why Stitching for the Soul? Stitching makes me happy and is an integral part of my life, it keeps me busy and enables me to meet people who are like-minded, making and buying well crafted hand-made items. I am partial to a bit of soul music too!

I produce carefully made, physical pieces which please the eye and brighten up the homes which take them in: using only the highest quality fabrics and threads, each piece is made using a variety of free machine embroidery, appliqué and delicate stitched patterns. But perhaps the largest part of my work involves planning aesthetic colour schemes and composition so that each creation is harmonious and balanced.
