Alison Whateley Design

category: Textiles & Stitch - Interiors

I am a self taught textile artist living and working in Mid Devon. I have always been creative, and when I was younger I enjoyed both watercolour painting and sewing, so I have now combined the two to create beautiful individual pieces of textile art inspired by the natural world around me.

Colour and texture play a big part in my work, and I am always experimenting with new combinations. I use appliqué, free motion machine embroidery and some hand stitching to produce my pieces that each  evolve as I go along, therefore no two pieces are exactly the same.

I source all sorts of new and vintage fabrics, lace, buttons and beads to use in my work, and particularly love using vintage lace in my pieces.

Andrew Spilsbury Shaker Boxes

category: Furniture & Wood

region: South West

I have had a love of working with wood for over 40 years, mostly furniture making but also some turning and now box making.

I love the smell of wood when it is worked, exposing and presenting the grain for others to appreciate.  I have made furniture inspired by pieces made by the Shaker craftsmen and now make Shaker boxes to their traditional patterns, using Cherry and Maple woods steam bent and fastened with copper tacks and rivets.

My boxes, trays and carriers with handles make thoughtful and useful presents. I continue to develop my range of creations in order to offer useful and decorative objects to treasure and enjoy.  Sizes are from 9cm x 6cm x 3cm to 36cm x 25cm x 15cm. Prices from £20 to £140 approx.

A maker of contemporary jewellery in sterling silver and resin, I use multiple layering techniques to suspend delicate silver elements, freshwater pearls and tiny filigree style pieces made from resin inside a handmade resin shell.

Ideas are formed around observations of the landscape and the ways in which it can mirror or influence emotion. When I see something beautiful in nature I am moved to create an impression of how it felt to be in that moment.

Using quiet colour combinations and subtle changes in texture, current pieces capture the mood of soft, reflected light diffused through clouds.

I make kitchen textiles products and cushions. I’ve been a maker all my life – from a child if I wanted something I was encouraged to make it. My products are designed on paper, from which fabrics are printed and then I make the final pieces myself. They come initially from an idea of producing a range of pictures that could have been produced by famous artists. Cushions offer a natural way to present them, but I also have a passion for big aprons, like catering aprons but with designs that make them fun or as elegant as the apron itself will make people look. Wearing a big apron makes you feel ready for work, like you can achieve the world!

Long before I became a silversmith, I had a passion for jewellery. Walk into a gallery and like a magpie, I’d head straight to the shiny jewellery cabinets before looking at anything else. Admiring beautiful handmade jewellery is a pleasure in itself. But then you spot a piece that makes your eyes widen, your smile […]

Art-Ceramics

category: Ceramics

region: South West

I am a ceramic artist inspired by the scenery of the beautiful coastline of Devon and Cornwall. Working from my studio in the grounds of Cockington Court near Torquay in Devon, I design and make a range of quirky sculptures of harbours, boats, fish and much more. Hand built using earthenware clay no two are exactly the same, so you can be sure of owning a truly unique piece of art. Each harbour takes several hours to make, paint and fire they are then finished with wooden masts, wire rigging and tiny colourful flags. Driftwood is also used as a base for some of the little boats, sailing on a sea of ceramic shells a colourful hand painted sail and tiny fish hanging on twine as if they have just been caught. I am always happy to take commissions or to personalise a special piece for you.

I spent many years formally studying and exploring ceramics, but the moment I started experimenting with wool, I was hooked. It’s a lovely natural material to work with and I’m particularly drawn to its textural and sculptural qualities. Working from my North Devon studio I mainly use a process called needle felting (also known as […]

Hand built porcelain landscapes and figures influenced by the environment, personal events and the nature of porcelain itself. Shapes and forms of interest found in miniature landscapes, architecture, the circus and 17th Century British pottery are reinterpreted and combined in the clay to form a unique and distinctive style.

Imagery and themes are reworked and revisited but no piece is repeated. The last piece informs the next and has evolved as a continuous visual diary now spanning 11 years. Each element or symbol has a personal history or a meaning and my maker’s mark, in the shape of a key, can be found somewhere on each piece. The work is entirely hand built from porcelain, decorated with on glaze enamels, slips, lustres and more recently rare vintage lithographs.

Bronwen makes wearable, sculptural jewellery from repurposed and recycled industrial plastics. She imbues these soulless materials with character by working their surfaces till their colours soften and they feel natural in the hand. The shapes she uses reference those worn by the sea and allude to the fact that these ubiquitous and non-biodegradable materials will […]
